UFC: Matt Hamill Addresses Deaf Controversy

Denver - Good afternoon, everybody! I have received word that UFC.com has published an article featuring Matt Hamill responding to the deaf community’s so-called controversy regarding his film. Hamill addresses the “controversy” surrounding his decision to cast a hearing actor in the starring role in a film about Hamill’s life.

He expresses “shock” at the controversy and acknowledges that he understands the “segment of the deaf community” that is criticizing his decision. Yet, he remains firm in his decision to cast Eben Kostbar as the role of Hamill in the un-yet-made film.

Click here to read the UFC.com article.

Paotie’s Postscript: Great! It is too bad that the “controversy” caused audition cancellations for other deaf actors and actresses at RIT and Gallaudet. Regardless, Matt Hamill worked for his movie and is entitled to cast whomever he wants in it.

As lots of people have said (and join in if you like):

GO MATT GO!!

Be good .. or be good at it.

:)

I agree, Paotie. It’s sad when groups actually take the time and effort to ruin other Deaf, deaf, and hh people the opportunity to audition for a spot on the movie but now it’s to be done in NY. And Matt Hamill is right. The criticisms leveled against him is small and have no gonads speak of compared to the majority of the population in support of him and his endeavors.

McConnell ..

I agree. Heck, the reasons for the “controversy” since the weekend have mutated endlessly, which goes to show that this should not have happened.
:)
Paotie

Cancelled long time ago!

Rod

I hate the fact that Matt feels he has to justify himself. It is a shame that instead of this being a wonderful movie of overcoming situations, it is a focus of just deafness.

valerie

I am glad to see that Matt is not moved by the “controversy”, but the fuss sure cast a negative light on the deaf community. :o(

Karen Mayes

Once again, Go, Matt, Go!!

lol

Ben

That someone has raised a petition against Matt, makes me wonder what the hell is going on in America ! Can he not take these people to court for discrimination and defamation ? Time these extremist deaf were taken to account !

MM

Certain deaf Americans are screwed up, blame it on Paddy. :)

Oh
dear
god

It’s not the second coming that a hearing actor is playing a deafie!

Guess a few in the Deaf community aren’t gonna let this die…sheesh, a mountain out of a molehill.

Ann_C

Ann_C, and we have a total of 21 idiots who signed that petition so far. What’s more, these online petitions are not worth a darn no matter how many people sign in.

Yeah, it’s not like the petition has any real legal validity. Heck, it’s not like there’s a court case or a law involved here. Too much conjuring over “injury” or “discrimination”, and the film hasn’t even been shot yet.

Ann_C

Make that 24 idiots so far.

Petition?

I am one of the hecklers. Petition online? No, Thanks. I have never trusted any petitions in the online at all. Getting any spams and Identity Theft are not more helpful from the online at all.

Make me smarter.

I saw Matt Hamill’s recent announcement….Facts are not more helpful for us to understand better.

What can I say?

All I am saying is that there is a flip-flop.

Matt’s film production has a low-budget. No Payments at all. :-/

Certain deaf Americans are screwed up, blame it on Paddy. (CAndy)

Paddy IS the anti-christ, Certain British deaf screwed up too :) (You take your mind off them, and before you know it a new religion is formed…. but at least we Brits stopped there and sent it to you lol….) You are the only cuntry in the world to run a class on it ! (Y’all bored or something ?) :)

MM

Hey, MM this is totally embarassing I know! I have never had anything to do with deafhood and am trying to “save” them poor deaf souls!
:)

Don’t TRY ! the more you suggest they are a sign short of a debate, they gang together and join up making it worse. The trick really is to encourage them, then watch them fractionalise and self-destruct in months, it’s what they do…. They now have a ‘Judas’ with poor old Matt to make things worse… :) I’m auditioning for the part of Herod…

MM

My plan is working beautifully!

heh heh… *rubbing hands*

*Laughing my ass off*

Thanks for the advice, MM

Mike, it’s working!!!!!!

Yes, Mike McC.

Obviously, you are truly Eikm Voldermort. Perfecto.

MM, Ay, ay, ay…..you can reprimand Paddy Ladd and the deafhood in USA all you want. You can also rib us in USA all you want, MM.

I have virtually no understanding of the logistics of creating a movie, and the process of developing a career for oneself in the acting profession remains a mystery to me. But some of my colleagues have experience in film and movie-related professions, and the word is that film is a notoriously difficult realm in which to make a living.

Yes, Steven Spielberg and Nicole Kidman are famous and rich. And so are the other few who work their way to coveted positions in the entertainment industry. But most people have very little to show for years of efforts and hundreds of fruitless auditions. It’s kind of weird that this controversy over Matt Hamill’s movie is predicated on the belief that professional success, fame, and fortune await virtually anyone involved with it.

JS

JS, as Nike’s famous words…”Just do it.” It is clear that this is to be a low budget film and that there are people who enjoy these challenges on making a film. And I’m sure many of them have dreams of finally breaking through ala “Rocky” which was a $1 million dollar low budget movie. JS, didn’t you also believed that Matt was paid by the producers to go along with the choice of actor Eben? And tried to create a controversy over that one, too? Hmmm?

I didn’t know the financial arrangements, so I did not make any guess about who was paying whom on the movie. In the comments to another of Paotie’s entries on this movie, DJ wrote of Hamill’s receipt of funds, “They’re paying him well and he has the obligation to support this production.”

McConnell, when you subsequently wrote that Hamill “is not getting ‘one dime’ out of this movie or received payments from producers that ‘influenced’ his decision about the lead actor selection,” it seemed that you were opening up the door to charges that evil hearing people were exploiting yet another deaf person by depriving him of the generous revenue from this enterprise. Wanna rebut that accusation in advance?

JS

No opening of doors. Remember, again. None of this wild-eyed conspiracy theories. I don’t do that. Ok? Others have and continue to do so. I contacted Matt about it and he told me unequivocally that he never received a dime from productions about his decision to go with Eben. Then I reported it here that he didn’t receive one dime. It was YOU who wanted to toss around these wild-eyed conspiracty theories that Matt was getting paid to support Eben.

Not so.

Again, no one is being deprived. You keep inferring that with that constant knee jerk reaction. Learn to let go.

And as a clarification on the deprived part I would toss that question to those who would’ve gone to an audition in Gallaudet or RIT/NTID but cannot now. Instead, if they want to make that trek, they can still go to NY for that. Nothing is really deprived per se but still an opportunity if one is serious about it. Again, Matt simply made his decision. It’s Eben. Learn to let go of the conspiracy theories.

Er, sorry, but I don’t recall where I tossed around wild-eyed conspiracy theories. In my most recent statement at 10:13 AM, I was being sarcastic about how to misinterpret your post.

JS

Excuse moi, JS, “…being sarcastic about how to misinterpret your post”?

That’s how wild-eyed conspiracy theories get started in the first place.

Ann_C

Thank you, Ann.

Well, then I apologize for having been ambiguous with a statement about “evil hearing people…exploiting yet another deaf person by depriving him of the generous revenue from this enterprise.” If that isn’t sarcastic language, then I will try to think of a way to clarify my statements in the future. Like copying Paotie’s line that I’m just messing with you.

And no, McConnell, I never believed that Hamill was paid anything, and I didn’t try to create a controversy over that, as you asked in your seemingly rhetorical questions of 9:28 AM yesterday. If you can quote a specific statement of mine where I said that prior to 9:28 AM yesterday, I will apologize for that, too. Otherwise, I would be grateful for your clarification on that matter.
