Monday Morning Weirdness

Colorado Springs – Another Monday, another week and that means time for Monday Morning Weirdness to get your week started. Today, instead of a smattering of weird facts, I’ve decided to focus on an elderly woman who has defied more odds than a multiple Powerball winner could claim after winning back-to-back lotteries.

Meet Doris “Granny D” Haddock, 94 and the star of an upcoming HBO documentary, titled, Run Granny Run. The documentary, which was filmed in 2004 while Granny D ran for a US Senate seat, showcases the unique struggles that any would-be politician would likely have to endure. Add to fact Granny D once walked through blinding blizzards at the age of 90 to rally political support, and the documentary offers a tantalizing mix of unknown and unexplored possibilities for the average American.

After a local Democratic withdrew from consideration for the same New Hampshire congressional seat in the US Senate, Granny D decided she would challenge the incumbent, Republican Judd Gregg during the 2004 elections. HBO documented her campaign, in particular, focusing on the final four months of her bid to win a seat in the US Congress.

The documentary – shown only on HBO – will be aired October 18, 2007. Be sure to set your DVR for either DirecTV or TiVO to record Run Granny Run later this month.

Quick Hits:

  • Granny D was kicked out of Emerson college after she married her late husband, James because school policy forbidded married college students in the 1930′s
  • Granny D once helped stopped hydrogen bombing tests being performed in Alaska
  • In 1999, Granny D set out to walk across the country to raise awareness of finance reform and the electoral college’s many problems; she trained for a year prior to her 2000 walk across the country
  • 14 sneakers and 3,000+ miles in 2000 left Granny D with a growing following; her stops included treks through severe heat, blinding blizzards and sore feet

If a 94-year-old can run for US Senate, then there’s unlimited potential for the things you can do. What’s your excuse?

Here’s to having a great week. Let’s go!

:)
